Paper dolls have been a classic playtime for Western children for decades. Today, many artists are returning to paper dolls as an art form.
ENTERTAINMENT FULL OF TRADITION AND HISTORY
The curious thing is that paper dolls are much older than we might think. It seems that the first paper dolls known, according to various specialists, appeared in the 18th century in France. Originally, they were modelled on the royal and aristocratic figures of the time.
At first, they were an accessory so that those who were going to wear an outfit could see how a dress would look on. Later, cutouts became a form of children's entertainment. In Spain, the first known cutouts date back to around the 1930s. In some parts of the country, they were known by a unique name: “mariquitas” or “mariquitinas”.
