Sibari is a town that belongs to the commune of Cassano allo Ionio, in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region of our neighbouring country of Italy. Its name derives from an ancient Greek colony called Sibaris , located in the Gulf of Taranto, in the Ionian Sea, and whose archaeological remains are located nearby. Sibari reached a time of splendour, which made its inhabitants famous: the Sibaritas. Their taste for luxury and a leisurely life gave rise to the term sibarita in our language.

In Sybarites , abundance, luxury and comfort reigned, being the hallmarks of the Sybarites , defining a lifestyle that has been projected and maintained to this day as a concept. Roman historians called Magna Grecia (Great Greece) the entire set of coastal areas located in the south of Italy and Sicily, places where the Greeks had founded colonies since the 8th century BC. There, a notable urban development was achieved, with monuments that are an example of the high economic level they managed to achieve. In addition, literature, philosophy and all the arts in general were the breeding ground for their societies , which further enhanced their development. In this way, Sybaris founded Poseidonia, whose temples are a faithful reflection of the impressive architecture that existed in these cities. Its extension was enormous and it is estimated that it controlled an area of at least 25 neighbouring cities, which gave rise to a large army.
